Cardinals and Popes in Shakespeare and Early Modern Drama

Information

There are four Cardinals in Shakespeare's plays:

Cardinal Wolsey (Henry VIII)

Cardinal Campeius (Henry VIII) - historically Lorenzo Campeggio

Cardinal Pandulph (King John) - historically Pandulf Verraccio

Cardinal Beaufort (Henry VI Parts 1 and 2) - historically Henry Beaufort

None of whom became Pope in their lifetime.

However we have only to look to Shakespeare's contemporaries for Popes in drama:

A Pope appears in Marlowe's Dr Faustus

Cardinal Monticelso in John Webster's The White Devil - the real life Cardinal went on to become Pope Paul IV
